| A redescription of the genus Mustelus was undertaken in order to resolve the taxonomic confusion surrounding it. Metric characteristics, number of vertebrae, size and form of the teeth, colour, biology and geographical distribution are considered in description of the species M. mustelus (Linnaeus, 1758), Mustelus asterias Cloquet 1821, and M. mediterraneus new species, the several synonyms for each of which are listed. General remarks on each are made, and a final dichotomous key for identification is presented. |
